LIVING WITH COLD

FEW OF US WHO are exposed to a cold environment for at least half the year give much thought to the fact that we are not physiologically designed to live there. We are homeotherms, handicapped by the need to maintain a body core temperature of 37˚C (98.6˚F). In other words we must rely on clothing and a protective shelter to survive in all but a subtropical environment. On the plus side, our body is equipped with its own protective mechanisms, some that we feel and many that we do not, which attempt to maintain core temperature at its optimum. It is our responsibility to understand these involuntary systems so that we can help and not hinder their chance of success.
